Game Development
Developed by Chinese studio Naked Rain, Ananta is an upcoming open-world game that appears to draw inspiration from Grand Theft Auto and several other well-known titles, though it features anime-style character designs. Recently, Ananta revealed more details about its gameplay mechanics and world, sparking even more comparisons.
Ever since its announcement in 2023, Ananta has remained one of the most anticipated games. At first, it was thought to be another Genshin Impact-esque gacha game, but recent information suggests it doesn't include mechanics from that genre. That said, Ananta appears to borrow elements from various other video game genres, creating an interesting blend of popular features in a single title.
Ananta Is Like GTA, Spider-Man, Watch Dogs, and Sleeping Dogs Fused Into One Game
Nearly nine months after its intriguing announcement trailer, Ananta, previously known as Project Mugen, released a new gameplay trailer. Thanks to the video, fans got a glimpse of the core mechanics, including a Spider-Man-like swinging ability that looked straight out of an Insomniac title. The trailer also showcased driving scenes that drew comparisons to the Grand Theft Auto series. But the inspirations and similarities don't end there.
The hand-to-hand combat in Ananta appears heavily inspired by Sleeping Dogs, and there seem to be some hacking elements involved that remind many of the Watch Dogs series. Additionally, some suggest the anime-style protagonists, especially the female ones, resemble characters from HoYoverse's Zenless Zone Zero, adding to the list of games that seem to have inspired Ananta. As if these inspirations weren't enough, Naked Rain's upcoming game also features side characters with bizarre futuristic styles reminiscent of Cyberpunk 2077.
While the overall reaction to Ananta's multi-genre approach has been largely positive, some have criticized specific aspects. In a new gameplay video released on September 25 during the 2025 Tokyo Game Show, the male protagonist, called Captain, can be seen fighting enemies using his symbiote-like ability. Many viewers expressed disappointment, noting that some of Captain's combat moves closely resemble Venom's abilities in the Spider-Man games. Specifically, critics pointed out how he grabs and slams enemies to the ground, calling it a perfect copy of Venom's Yank symbiote skill.
Developer Naked Rain has apparently made no comments on the comparisons between Ananta and other games like GTA and Spider-Man. This may be because the general reception from gaming communities has been positive, and the game has already accumulated over 12 million pre-registrations. Whether this pre-launch success will carry over to the actual game remains to be seen. What is clear for now is that, despite the controversial similarities to other well-known franchises, Ananta is one of the most anticipated games across multiple platforms and appears to have the potential to become a significant financial success for publisher NetEase Games.
