A hilarious glitch in the World of Warcraft: Midnight alpha caused all characters using the body type 2 Night Elf model to break and display an A-pose, instead of their normal animations. It is unclear what exactly caused this bug, but it was present for the entire fourth week of the alpha for World of Warcraft: Midnight.
The closed public alpha for WoW: Midnight began on October 2, giving select fans a first look at the early version of the highly anticipated expansion. Each week since then, World of Warcraft has opened up a new zone in Midnight for focused testing, making incremental changes as it went.
WoW: Midnight Alpha Body Type 2 Night Elf A-Pose Glitch
However, something comical occurred during the fourth week of testing, which began on October 22. For some reason in this build of the alpha, the animations for the body type 2 Night Elf model completely broke, causing everyone using this rig, including player characters and every female Nightborne and Kaldorei NPC in World of Warcraft, to default to an A-pose, regardless of what they do. Moving, jumping, attacking, and even mounting up did not resolve this; no matter what, they maintained this pose, with their equipped weapons clipping into the floor between their feet. WoW content creator MrGM captured footage of this comedic glitch in action and shared it on Twitter.
The A-pose is one of the more common starting positions animators use when dealing with 3D models. It is similar to the oft-memed T-pose, but features the arms at a more natural 45-degree angle, instead of 90 degrees. World of Warcraft uses the A-pose as its default for its modeling.
It is unclear exactly why this glitch happened. It could be that World of Warcraft was testing some sort of new animation and something in the code broke, or it was an unexpected side effect of content that had been implemented. Regardless, this entertaining bug will probably be resolved in the next build of the alpha.
Speaking of which, the alpha servers are currently down at press time, meaning the fifth build will likely arrive within the next day or two. According to its schedule, this will also be the final build of the alpha, where all previously available content will be accessible alongside some of Midnight's endgame activities, including the Prey system. The alpha is almost finished, meaning the Midnight beta is just around the corner. Fans who want to get in on the beta can opt in for a chance to enter on the official website, but they can guarantee themselves a slot by pre-purchasing the World of Warcraft: Midnight Epic Edition.
