The Resident Evil franchise could be heading to Japan in a future installment, according to comments from Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa.
Over the past three decades, Resident Evil has taken players to a variety of memorable locations, including Raccoon City in the United States, rural Spain in Resident Evil 4, Louisiana in Resident Evil 7, and Eastern Europe in Resident Evil Village. However, despite being developed by Japan-based Capcom, the series has never featured Japan as its primary setting.
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Kumazawa revealed that the development team has considered Japan as a potential backdrop for a future Resident Evil title. While no official plans have been confirmed, he noted that creating a game closer to the team's home country is a natural idea worth exploring.
A Japan-based setting could introduce a fresh horror experience inspired by the country's unique folklore, urban legends, historic locations, and atmospheric environments. Such a move would also open the door for both returning fan-favorite characters and entirely new protagonists.
The idea comes at a time when horror games are increasingly exploring diverse settings. With Silent Hill recently embracing a Japan-focused narrative, many fans believe Resident Evil could also benefit from a similar shift in location.
Although the next Resident Evil game may still be years away, the possibility of a Japan-set entry has already generated excitement among longtime fans of the franchise.
