Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 has introduced a major lineup of gaming-themed collaborations, but concerns over bot-heavy matchmaking are quickly becoming a talking point among players.
The season, which launched on August 20, brings crossover content inspired by franchises including Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, and Pac-Man, alongside new weapons, map changes, and gameplay mechanics. However, some players claim the new season is filling a larger portion of matches with AI-controlled opponents.
Community-shared statistics from Fortnite player Au5la indicate that the number of real players in matches may have dropped significantly compared with previous seasons. Data collected through community tools reportedly showed roughly 58–65 real players per match during earlier seasons, while some Chapter 7 Season 4 matches have reportedly contained as few as 25 real players in a 100-player lobby.
Players have expressed frustration that bot-heavy matches can reduce the competitive intensity of Fortnite. Some community members claim that encounters with real opponents are becoming concentrated toward the final stages of matches, making earlier portions of gameplay feel less challenging.
Bots have been part of Fortnite's matchmaking system for years, particularly as a way to support newer or lower-skilled players. However, the latest complaints have reignited discussions around skill-based matchmaking, lobby composition, and overall player experience.
The issue is particularly notable because Chapter 7 Season 4 is built around major gameplay and crossover additions. The season introduces the Tetris Rift, which creates blocks that can be used as temporary cover and provides an area-of-effect healing effect. Sonic's Green Hill Zone also features collectible Rings that provide additional Overshield, adding another layer to combat strategy.
More crossover content is reportedly expected throughout the season. Players have already spotted a structure resembling Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, fueling speculation about a potential Five Nights at Freddy's collaboration. A Persona 5 crossover is also expected later in the season, potentially expanding Fortnite's growing lineup of gaming properties.
For now, Epic Games has not publicly confirmed that the reported changes in real-player counts represent an intentional adjustment to matchmaking. If the community reports continue, however, lobby composition could become an important discussion surrounding the remainder of Chapter 7 Season 4.

While bots can improve accessibility and reduce queue times, maintaining the right balance between AI and real players is essential for preserving competitive tension, meaningful progression, and player retention.
