Fortnite is gearing up for one of its most exciting updates yet, as Epic Games officially confirms the downtime schedule for the upcoming v40.20 patch. The servers are set to go offline on April 16, 2026, at 4 AM ET, giving players a clear idea of when the update rollout begins.
As a live service title, Fortnite continues to deliver frequent updates to keep gameplay fresh and engaging. Since the launch of Chapter 7 Season 2 on March 19, the game has already received multiple updates, including the April Fool’s event and the introduction of the OG Pass in patch v40.10.
With the v40.20 update, players should expect temporary server downtime lasting a few hours. Matchmaking will be disabled approximately 30 minutes before downtime, meaning players won’t be able to start new matches after 3:30 AM ET.
What’s New in v40.20?
This update brings several major additions that are generating buzz across the community:
Save the World Goes Free-to-Play
One of the biggest highlights of this update is that Save the World, the original PvE mode of Fortnite, is now becoming free-to-play for all users.
Previously, this mode was locked behind paid access through Founder’s Packs or Quest Packs. Starting April 16, everyone can jump in and experience the classic tower defense-style gameplay.
However, it’s important to note that free players will not earn V-Bucks, as this feature remains exclusive to paid users.
Despite receiving fewer updates in recent years, Save the World still offers a unique gameplay experience, especially for players who enjoy strategy and cooperative missions.
