Dune: Awakening Director Comments on Crossplay Support

The director of Dune: Awakening says that crossplay "is no problem" for Funcom. While the survival MMO is currently only available on PC, the studio has reassured fans that a console release will happen eventually. Much about the Dune: Awakening Xbox and PlayStation versions is still a mystery, but it sounds like gamers on different systems may be able to play together.

Funcom has experienced some major highs and lows with its sci-fi MMO. While the game has drawn an impressive number of players, it has also seen its fair share of controversy, especially regarding how some mechanics work and how easy it is for players to make things harder for others. The studio has responded with regular patches, but some Dune: Awakening updates have split the player base, pleasing some while angering others. Still, Funcom could bring people together in the future, depending on how some functionality pans out.

Dune: Awakening Director Says Crossplay Is in Sony and Microsoft's Hands

In a conversation with Wccftech, Game Director Joel Bylos confirmed that work on the console release is ongoing and that the possibility of crossplay is up to PlayStation and Xbox. According to Bylos, "it depends on what the platform holders have to say," as Funcom has the servers to make it happen, but it ultimately needs permission from both sides to make it happen. Recent history may shine a positive light on that answer. Both Sony and Microsoft have been moving away from exclusivity, something Helldivers 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded coming to rival consoles on the same day emphasizes.

As for when fans can expect the game on their respective consoles, Funcom is still avoiding specifics. The company has previously stated that Dune: Awakening will come to consoles in 2026, and Bylos reaffirmed that window in the interview. He jokingly commented that the release would likely come out around the same time as Grand Theft Auto 6, but didn't offer much beyond a general "next year" timeline. He also said that when Dune: Awakening does come to consoles, Funcom may introduce private servers to Xbox and PlayStation players as it has on PC.

The game will likely get a few big updates before launching on consoles. Funcom's current roadmap includes Dune: Awakening receiving at least two DLC in the first half of 2026, which could very well be before a console release.
