Infinity Ward has officially revealed the first gameplay footage of the revamped DMZ mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. The extraction-based mode returns with major improvements, aiming to deliver a deeper and more immersive experience than its original debut in Modern Warfare 2.
The gameplay trailer showcased squads of operators entering a dangerous combat zone, scavenging valuable loot, engaging in intense firefights, reviving teammates, and fighting to successfully extract before losing everything. The new DMZ experience expands on the core extraction shooter formula while maintaining the fast-paced gunplay that Call of Duty is known for.
Set after the events of the main campaign, DMZ takes place in the Hajin Exclusion Zone, a dynamic battlefield filled with hostile forces, story-driven objectives, side missions, and open-world exploration opportunities. Infinity Ward has rebuilt many of the mode's systems based on community feedback, introducing improved AI enemies, enhanced progression mechanics, and a more rewarding extraction experience.
Players will be able to complete narrative missions, tackle optional side activities, and freely explore the combat zone while building their Forward Operating Base (FOB). The progression system has also been redesigned to provide a more meaningful sense of advancement throughout each deployment.
The reveal has generated positive reactions across the Call of Duty community, with many players praising the improved gameplay mechanics and expanded feature set. However, DMZ will face strong competition from established extraction shooters such as Escape From Tarkov and Arc Raiders, both of which continue to dominate the genre.
Despite the challenges, Infinity Ward appears confident that the updated DMZ mode can establish itself as a major pillar of the Modern Warfare experience. With refined gameplay systems, deeper progression, and a greater focus on player choice, the studio hopes to transform DMZ into a long-term success when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, 2026.
